Shanel

A local community leader purchases in the nation’s capital.

Shanel

Shanel was born and raised in Compton, California to her African and Native American mother and her Nicaraguan father. This unique blend of cultures played an important role in her upbringing, forming her identity, and shaping who she is today. Unfortunately, both of her parents passed away unexpectedly when Shanel was a young adult forcing her to grow up fast and navigate this world all on her own. That experience strengthened her independence and determination to build stability and a meaningful life despite the significant personal loss. She made the cross-country move to attend Howard University. At Howard she not only completed her education but also found a deeper sense of purpose and spiritual grounding. It exposed her to a community of thinkers, leaders, and changemakers who reinforced her commitment to service, policy, and community development. After college, Shanel stayed in Washington D.C. where she has worked for the local government helping residents navigate housing issues, public services, and listening to community concerns. She says, “through my role, I see firsthand how access to stable housing can change the trajectory of someone’s life.” Through a recent down payment grant from Greenline, Shanel was able to purchase a home of her own in the nation’s capital providing stable housing for herself and an investment that will hopefully leave a legacy and shape the trajectory of her life and her family for generations to come. She says, “becoming a homeowner has shaped my deep belief that homeownership is more than a financial milestone. It represents stability, dignity, and the opportunity to plant roots in a community.” Congratulations, Shanel!
